Cornel Thiersen, AMFT
Hi, I am Cornel, an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. The decision to pursue this field came from a deep desire to support people through the ups and downs of life. At the core of my work is a belief in the power of connection and collaboration, and the importance of creating a space where people feel truly heard and understood. My goal is to meet each person where they are and walk alongside them in a way that honors their experiences, strengths, and goals.
I was born and raised in the beautiful countryside of South Africa, surrounded by a rich, multicultural community that instilled in me a deep appreciation for culture and connection. This foundation ignited a lasting interest in cultural learning and a practice of finding growth and purpose within my community. Outside of work, I find joy in spending time with friends and family, taking long walks with our sweet dog Riley, reading, hiking, and knitting. One of my favorite things about living in California is watching the wonderful sunsets over the ocean.
Before coming to the U.S., I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Human Life Sciences at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. I then went on to earn my Master’s in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy at Pepperdine University in California. My work is deeply guided by the African philosophy of Ubuntu, "I am because we are", a reminder of our shared humanity and the importance of community. Rooted in this belief, I strive to offer thoughtful support, foster meaningful connections, and provide compassionate care.
My approach is grounded in client-centered and adaptable care, with a focus on honoring each person’s goals and voice. My training in family systems provides a foundational lens, while evidence-based practices from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are thoughtfully integrated. I have a flexible and compassionate style that creates space for the unique needs and experiences that each individual brings. My experience includes supporting individuals and families navigating anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, and the impact of childhood illness.
